Why re-reading feels productive and isn't
When you read a worked solution, every line makes sense. That feeling of understanding is real — but it's recognition, not recall. You're confirming that someone else's reasoning holds together, which is a much easier task than generating that reasoning yourself on a blank page.
The test asks you to generate. So study that way: closed book, blank paper, from scratch. Researchers call this retrieval practice, and across decades of studies it consistently outperforms re-reading for long-term retention — often dramatically, even though students reliably predict the opposite.
The discomfort is the point. If studying feels effortless, it's probably not doing much.
The 7-day plan
Each session is 30–50 minutes. Seven shorter sessions beat one long weekend grind, because spacing — spreading practice across days — strengthens memory more than the same total time crammed together.
- Day 1 — Map the territory. Write out every topic on the test as a checklist, from the syllabus or your teacher's review sheet. Next to each, mark it confident / shaky / lost. Don't study yet. You're deciding where the week's effort goes, and this takes fifteen minutes.
- Day 2 — Attack the "lost" pile. Start with what you understand least, while you still have time to recover. Work through two or three examples of each with your notes open. This is the one day where looking at solutions is fine — you're learning the method, not testing it.
- Day 3 — First closed-book attempt. Take three problems you did yesterday and redo them with notes shut. You'll get some wrong. That's information, not failure — every one you miss goes into your error log.
- Day 4 — The "shaky" pile, mixed. Work through the middle-confidence topics, but interleave them: alternate between topics rather than doing ten of the same type in a row. Blocked practice makes you feel fluent; mixed practice forces you to identify which method a problem needs, which is exactly what a test demands.
- Day 5 — Full practice test, timed. Past paper or your teacher's review sheet, in one sitting, timed, no notes, no phone. This rehearses the actual conditions — including the time pressure, which is a skill of its own.
- Day 6 — Only your mistakes. Mark Day 5 honestly, then re-solve every problem you got wrong, from scratch. Not "read the solution" — re-solve. Then add any new mistakes to the log.
- Day 7 — Light review. Skim your error log, redo two or three problems you've previously missed, check formulas you need to memorise. Twenty to thirty minutes, then stop. Cramming today costs more in sleep than it gains in knowledge.
Attempt from memory → check → log what went wrong → re-solve later. Every day of this plan is some version of that loop. If you remember nothing else, remember that re-solving your own mistakes is where nearly all the improvement comes from.
Your error log: the highest-value 20 minutes
Keep one page — paper or notes app — with every problem you get wrong. For each, record three things:
- The problem (or enough of it to find again)
- What went wrong, specifically. Not "I messed up" — something like "distributed the minus sign over only the first term" or "used the power rule on a product".
- The fix, in one line, in your own words.
The specificity matters enormously. Most students make the same handful of mistakes repeatedly across a whole year — sign errors when distributing, dropping a solution when taking a square root, forgetting +C. Naming yours turns a recurring leak into something you can actually watch for.
By test day this log is the most valuable page you own: a personalised list of exactly the ways you're likely to lose marks. Reviewing it beats re-reading the textbook by a wide margin.
If you only have two days
Realistically, sometimes the test is Thursday and it's Tuesday night. Compress, don't abandon:
- Tonight: One timed practice set covering the whole topic range. Mark it. Identify your three weakest areas. Around an hour.
- Tomorrow: Those three areas only — a few problems each, closed book. Then re-solve everything you got wrong tonight. Finish with a quick pass over formulas.
The temptation when time is short is to re-read everything broadly. Resist it. Narrow, active practice on your weakest topics beats a shallow sweep across all of them.
The night before and the morning of
- Stop studying early. Sleep consolidates what you practised; a late-night cram trades a durable gain for a fragile one. Tired arithmetic is also where careless errors breed.
- Pack your kit. Calculator (with working batteries), spare pen, ruler, allowed formula sheet, water. Removing tomorrow's small decisions lowers tomorrow's stress.
- Morning: one easy problem. Solve something you know you can do. It's a warm-up, the same way an athlete doesn't start cold — it gets you into the right mode before the clock starts.
- Skim the error log, not the textbook. Five minutes on your own recurring mistakes is worth more than twenty on content you already know.
During the test
- Do a first pass for the easy marks. Work through and answer everything you can do quickly, skipping anything that stalls you. Banking certain marks first protects against running out of time on question three.
- Show your working, always. Method marks are real marks. A wrong final answer with correct working often scores most of the credit; a bare wrong answer scores nothing.
- Sanity-check as you go. Negative length, a probability above 1, an answer a thousand times bigger than it should be — these are catchable in seconds. See the six ways to check an answer.
- If you blank, write what you know. Jot the relevant formula, or restate the problem in your own words. Starting anywhere often unlocks the rest, and partial working earns partial credit.
- Use leftover time to substitute back, not to stare. Re-reading an answer rarely reveals anything; testing it does.
